whenever you hear members of congress talk about any kind of fiscal cliff deal you have to approach it with a sort of believe everything and believe nothing attitude. i think that everybody wants to avoid having taxes go up for all americans as of january 1st but everybody has a price for that. and it, to me, it's about whether or not both sides are looking for a win-win deal, meaning, my opponent wins and i win. or whether both sides or one of the sides are looking for a deal where only i win and you lose and on top of all of that then we have to look at what do they want to include in any sort of deal? are we going to address entitlement reform? are we going to cut spending? are we only trying to deal with the tax cut issue? will we try to address the debt ceiling issue? so there are a lot of moving parts here. jon: it seems the campaign promise of the president to raise taxes on couples making over $250,000 a year, it seems like that almost has to come true in some form for the president and the democrats to swallow a deal? >> i think so. i think the president has been committed to

this is the bad season -- unhappy christmas for the republicans with the goal to get to the fiscal cliff, and get beyond that so that they can get to the debt ceiling. the debt ceiling is where they have leverage, advantage, and where the president is asking to increase the debt ceiling beyond the 2 #.2 trillion, these are american dollars, the $2.2 trillion that he was granted in borrowing power back in august. the republicans have to get to the point where that's the fulcrum for the debate. the president wants it out now and do it. he would like an unconditional increase and permanent, basically, increase in the debt ceiling now, in addition to the tax rate increase. the republicans have to survive this time as it relates to tax increases and get on to the ground of the debt ceiling. lou: way are the odds of survival if you have a senate minority leaders fill busting his own proposal on the floor of the senate, which some consider ill-considered. >> yeah, well, i mean, it it was a moment, wass't it? i mean, i don't think -- the republicans, clearly, are having a bad moment here. chris

the fiscal cliff very quickly here because the general consensus outlines of a deal out there. i know it doesn't sound that way. they're far apart. blah-blah. here is the idea. elements are emerging, folks, higher tax rates. nobody down here doesn't think there isn't going to be. if it's not 39% for the top 2%, it'll be 38%. some kind of compromise in the a area. the bad news and i've said this several times, the era of american austerity is beginning now and everybody is starting to realize that. the question is what's it going to look like? the good news is it's likely to be a gentle austerity, if i can say that, in 2013 and probably 2014 depending on the spending cuts. and there will be some cushion. the fed likely will continue its q/e program. they'll likely continue that during their meeting on december 12 that could provide some cushion against the austerity that we're going to be seeing in 2013 and 2014. let me comment on a couple of stocks that are moving today. toll brothers, folks, it doesn't get any better than this. 70% in orders. astounding. and their overall marg
